About Dr. Michel Babajanian, MD, FACS
Dr. Michel Babajanian is a board-certified Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon. He is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS), a Fellow of American College of Surgeons (ACS) as well as a Fellow of American Thyroid Association (ATA).
Dr. Babajanian was born in 1959. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from New York University in 1984. At that institution, he was granted honorary lifetime membership in Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society having completed his undergraduate studies summa cum laude. He then completed his medical education at UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles in 1988. At UCLA, he was recognized with honors becoming a lifetime member in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. Subsequently, he attended Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York where he completed his internship in General Surgery followed by residency training under supervision and direct mentorship of several renowned Head and Neck Surgeons at Mount Sinai Medical Center and affiliated hospitals in 1993. His training heavily emphasized thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head and neck cancer surgery as well as facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
In addition to general Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat), Dr. Babajanian has special interest and expertise in treatment of benign and malignant tumors of head and neck, including all tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands as well as the salivary glands, cervical lymph node enlargements and other cystic and solid tumors of the face and neck. Minimally invasive, video assisted and endoscopic techniques are utilized when applicable and appropriate, to optimize the outcomes of surgical procedures. In minimally invasive surgeries of thyroid, parathyroid and salivary glands as well as minimally invasive endoscopic nasal, sinus and laryngeal surgeries and other head and neck surgical procedures, the state of the art technology and monitoring devices such as a the intraoperative nerve monitors and rapid intraoperative parathyroid hormone testing, intraoperative frozen section examinations and the most advanced videoscopic and endoscopic surgical equipment and instruments are utilized.
He works closely with excellent and expert endocrinologists (medical specialists of thyroid and parathyroid glands and other endocrine glands), internists, medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, head and neck radiologists, pathologist consultants and renowned thoracic surgeons to provide a comprehensive medical and surgical care to his patients as is indicated by the nature of the illness and the extent of the disease. A team approach is highly emphasized in order to maintain a broad and all-encompassing ability and expertise in providing the care needed by our patients. Such medical and surgical care is always delivered after full discussion and disclosure of the diagnosis, nature of the treatment, alternative treatments as well as risks and benefits of each treatment modality with the patient and their designated family members. Patients are always encouraged to fully participate in their own care and in the decision making process taking into consideration the consensus opinion of all physician members of the treatment team.
At his office and in the operating room, he utilizes the state of the art diagnostic technology as well as intraoperative nerve monitoring techniques in combination with minimally invasive surgery to obtain the best possible treatment outcomes for his patients. With vast experience, he has mastered the minimally invasive functional endoscopic nasal and sinus surgical techniques for treatment of chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction and tumors of nasal passages and sinuses. In addition, he is well trained in head, neck and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, treatment of snoring and sleep apnea as well as treatment of voice and swallowing disorders. Comprehensive treatment of allergies and infectious diseases of ear, nose and throat is an integral part of his core clinical practice.
Dr. Babajanian's office is equipped with the cutting edge diagnostic modalities for evaluation and treatment of hearing and balance problems. The entire gamut of noninvasive audio vestibular diagnostic testing, Audiograms and tympanograms, Videoassisted Nystagmography, ABR (BSER), Electrocochlography (ECOG) and Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) tests are all performed at our office by experienced and licensed audiologists. The office owns the state of the art on site Computerized Tomography (CT) scanner for accurate and high resolution imaging of paranasal sinuses and the nose. No additional appointments need to be made for such imaging studies when one is deemed necessary. Moreover, the results of the CT scan are available immediately to the patient and to Dr. Babajanian, and as such, no times is lost between the initial visit and the initiation of the therapy as indicated by the results of imaging study. Dr. Babajanian, at Otosurgical Group Medical Clinic, has an in-house microbiology laboratory, overseen by an experienced microbiologist for accurate diagnosis of Ear, Nose and Throat bacterial and fungal infections. Cultures and in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity testing guide and enhance the efficacy of anti-infective medical treatments. Evaluation of diseases of nasal passages, throat and larynx (voice box and vocal cords) is performed using in-office fiberoptic endoscopic equipment allowing the patient to personally visualize the findings of the examination in real time.
Dr. Babajanian actively participates in continuing medical education programs and activities to maintain and enhance his current expertise with up-to-date familiarity with the newest advances in his area of specialty. On several occasions, he has traveled nationally and internationally to spend time with other expert ENT and Endocrine Surgeons to learn surgical techniques such as minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgeries which require small and concealed incisions (about 3 centimeters) and sutureless surgery employing start of the art surgical instrumentation. In addition to managing a busy private clinical practice at his office in Century City Medical Plaza, Los Angeles, he is directly involved in teaching medical students and resident physicians the art and science of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at several hospitals and surgical facilities.
